Today is full of dreamy energy.

Neptune is the gateway to our imagination. Behind the watery veil, we see the hidden words of our fantasies and fears.

Neptune is in Pisces right now, and combined with Mercury in Retrograde it might be difficult to tell dreams from reality.

Four of Swords advises us not to resist this surreal energy. Instead, let yourself daydream and let your mind water. Be careful, however, of complete withdrawal.

This is just a brief resting point on a longer journey. Neptune can tempt us to live with the “lotus eaters,” ignoring reality in favor of our own interpretation of events. The shadow side of these dreamy waters is addiction and denial. It is all too easy to get lost in the narcotic bliss of dreamland.

In the Tarot, fours generally indicate a time of conservation and rest before beginning the next phase of growth. This is a good time to reflect on alternate realities and future possibilities.

In the context of social justice, these cards remind us to imagine not a future where only our personal problems are resolved, but to stretch our minds to envision a scenario with peace and prosperity for all of humanity.

Today Mercury stations retrograde. Energy from yesterday’s transits continues to play a role in our thoughts and feelings today.

Venus is our planet of love and beauty. Venus influences our style of love, what we need to feel loved, what we find beautiful, and how we create beauty in our lives.

Pluto and Venus are still within a few degrees of each other in the last degrees of Capricorn. Where is this conjunction transiting your natal chart?

For me it is right between my 7th and (family) and 8th (public groups) house. I’ve been thinking a great deal about my marriage: how happy and fortunate I feel to have my partner Jason and how our union has brought us through so many challenging times. I feel a renewed sense of comfort and security that allows me to explore my own inner horizons.

I think this is also due to turning away from society’s expectations for nearly a year. Pop culture ideas of marriage and friendship often conflict with the reality of our lived experience. Quarantine has had many silver linings, and for me it has been casting off other people’s ideas of what I “should” be doing with any aspect of my life.

Love is complicated and it is the most important area we will explore in the coming years. How do we love ourselves? How do we love our fellow humans? There is no one right way save the way that makes you feel whole, seen, validated, heard, and valued.

One of the very best writers on love is bell hooks:
“Do not expect to receive the love from someone else you do not give to yourself…The light of love is always in us, no matter how cold the flame. It is always present, waiting for the spark to ignite, waiting for the heart to awaken.”

During this retrograde, spend some time exploring your ideas of love. Are you getting and giving what you need? And are you giving that all important love to yourself?

Pallas is an asteroid, the second to be discovered, after Ceres. In Greek mythology, Pallas is often used as another name for Athena. As such, it is linked to warrior goddess energy.

Interestingly, the story of Pallas Athena has a twist. There is a parallel myth in which Athena has a childhood friend, a girl named Pallas. After a quarrel, Zeus (Athena’s father) distracts Pallas, allowing Athena to kill her. As is the case with many myths, Athena is immediately flooded with regret for her act of passionate violence.

Presented with the Two of Swords, Pallas cautions us to use discretion in our application of force, especially in our partnerships and relationships.

Many cooperative groups are dissolving or reforming at this time. As you participate in these changing dynamics, consider how you might resolve any conflicts that arise with tact and diplomacy.

You might feel like striking down your opponent in righteous anger. While satisfying, this dramatic approach may cause you more challenges in the long run.

There us no need to burn bridges or destroy the entire situation in order to enact boundaries or assert your needs. Yest, sometimes a complete retreat or a clean break is necessary. If so, use your wisdom and maturity to extract yourself with as much grace and kindness as you can muster.

There are several significant transits today, as well as a full moon.

Full Moon in Leo: We see ourselves clearly, key ideas and issues are in the social “spotlight”

Venus Pluto Conjunction in Capricorn: How we love ourselves, how we see our bodies and how we care for ourselves may experience a seemingly magical transformation

Jupiter Sun Conjunction in Aquarius: There is a great deal of communication about big new ideas. Someone famous may play a role.

Additionally, this weekend, Mercury stations retrograde.

Today’s cards remind us to not get carried away with our emotions during this challenging time.

Sometimes there is no action to be taken in a given situation, and we are asked instead to sit with our feelings and work through how we really regard the situation.

Many things make me sad, or angry, but since those are “undesirable” emotions it can be tempting to gloss over those things, to minimize their impact, even to put on a happy face and bypass the work of dealing with such challenging issues.

But, if I turn away, how will I ever understand my anger, my sadness, my frustration? How will I know what inspires those feelings in me and why?

Recent events can feel like one long string of discomfort. In the midst of such disruption, we do have the chance to see ourselves in a different light. Of course we must pace ourselves, we must rest, we must go at our own pace.

But we must not give up the fight for a more just and equitable world.

When I see Pluto, I think about secrets, powerful change, and the renewal of repeating cycles.

Pluto is associated with Scorpio and is also linked to death and the underworld.

In my readings, the Emperor usually represents structure, masculine energy, and power gained through control or dominance of others.

Emperor energy has a place in helping us stay organized and grounded in reality. On the other hand, it is deeply tied to the patriarchy we hope to dissolve.

Today asks us to look at how we, consciously or not, purposefully or not, participate in a system of gender inequity. A system that is quickly becoming obsolete as we move into a post-gender world.

There is still shadow work to do as we strive to understand what a just society really looks like. What is social justice, anyway? And how does it look to hold a liberal administration accountable for dismantling itself and redistributing power?

These are questions we continue to ask amidst rapidly changing times. We are presented with an opportunity to change habits, actions, relationships and beliefs that tie us to a dying regime.

These lessons of death, of change, and of transformation will teach us how to live going forward.

The 9th house is ruled by Jupiter and the constellation Sagittarius.

Expansive energy, growth, education, travel, spiritual development and exploring new horizons are all 9th house endeavors.

I think about the expansiveness of Jupiter like Alice when she drinks a mysterious potion in the white rabbit’s house. Suddenly, she grows to several times her “normal” size, her arm shoots out the window, and her foot gets stuck in the chimney.

Paired with the two of cups, we are asked to consider our partnerships and collective ventures.

Perhaps you are part of a group that was formed for a particular purpose and has now run its course. Or maybe you are about to embark on a fresh new project with a new partner.

Regardless, change is in the works as you learn more about what is needed and what you want to do, as well as what resources are available to you at this time.

It will become increasingly clear not only where you are going but also who you want to accompany you on the journey.

Juno is a large asteroid that was once considered a planet. In Greek mythology, she is a goddess: the daughter of Saturn, wife of Jupiter, and mother of Mars.

Juno is nothing if not complicated, with many interpretations and meanings ascribed to her by scholars throughout time.

Now mostly known to represent youthful energy, Juno also represents how we use knowledge and power in a wise refined way.

The Astro-Oracle deck used here associates Juno with equality and partnership, and paired with the Ace of Swords it reminds us that we are not just in this for ourselves.

All Aces in Tarot bring in the new, and today we may be gifted with insight about our social roles. We may have a breakthrough or brand new idea about an old problem. Fresh information may come to light that prompts us to reexamine our role in a partnership or group endeavor.

This week, finesse may be more important than force. As the saying goes, you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Listen to the canaries, for they will be the first to signal danger.

It’s such an old idiom that young folks might not recognize it: the concept of a “canary in a coal mine.” Small domestic birds (known as sentinel species in this context) were taken by miners down into the tunnels, where deadly invisible gasses could build up without warning. If the canary died, the miner knew they must get out or risk suffocation.

There is another idiom, “sing like a canary” which implies that someone who is in trouble will tell all they know (spill the beans, let the cat out of the bag) to avoid further danger.

Finally, I offer the title of Maya Angelou’s autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”

Together, these three metaphors illustrate the vulnerability of marginalized peoples and the importance of amplifying melanated voices.

When we find ourselves at a crossroads, we must listen to those voices warning of the continued racism and oppression, invisible and pervasive, poisonous and deadly, that threatens to destroy us all.

Saturn conjunct Sun in Aquarius
We begin to see how the new administration will take shape, what structures are forming, what kind of support is available and what kinds of action we can take.

Todays cards invite us to hang out, observe and plan. We are again asked to look within for discernment.

These are unprecedented times. We can’t flow backward, but we’re still quite unsure what the future will hold. As Saturn transits the Sun, we may get a glimpse of what is to come.

If you’ve ever watched woodpeckers in the wild, they use all their senses to locate, store, and then relocate food such as acorns, which they bury into the wood of trees. Think about this strategy when your mind wanders into the many uncharted waters if the future: be discerning, be prepared, be patient.

Today’s cards ask us to find authority within ourselves.

Emperor energy is moving out of the collective and into individual autonomy.

Instead of seeking validation from existing power hierarchies, we begin to seek permission from ourselves and our ancestors.

Instead of doing what we have always done, we will use wisdom, experience, and insight to make necessary changes going forward.

Instead of striving to gain power and authority over others, we will seek power-sharing arrangements with communities of like minded folks, working in union toward a common goal.

The question I am still left with is, what IS that goal? And how do we begin to create a society where we are moving in the same direction?

The answer, I suspect, has something to do with banishing fear and embracing love.
