Daily Reading Mar 14

Sun Mar 14

Dreamy new moon energy continues with an invitation to dive into our inner worlds.

Today’s Rock Star Oracle is Robert Smith / Reflection. Combined with the Page of Staffs, it guides us to look inward at our own vast personal landscape.

This new moon has moved into Aries where it is conjunct the minor planet / comet Chiron. In astrology, Chiron is nicknamed the “wounded warrior” and it’s placement in your natal chart may indicate where your needs were not met in childhood. It may also indicate an area of inherited (epigenetic) trauma.

This moon-Chiron conjunction is also sextile Mars in Taurus and Saturn in Aquarius.

We may be motivated to confront some long dormant issues from youth that have recently come to light.

We may also be ready to change our habits or behaviors to cast off old and outdated coping strategies that served to protect in youth but are actually impeding our emotional growth as adults.

Transits with Chiron are an opportunity to forgive hurts we may have repressed in order to survive. When these dormant feelings are revealed, there is an invitation to heal.

You may be able to harness the energy of this changing season and cycle to transform those parts of yourself that are ready to be experienced and explored.

New Moon in Pisces – March 2021

Tarot reading + astrology for the coming moon cycle

Decks: Sharman-Castelli Tarot and my own Rock Star Oracle

This New moon carries intense Pisces energy, with Venus, Neptune, and the Sun clustered together with the moon in this sign. It is born in a watery dreamworld, field by fantastic visions of harmony and beauty. As the moon grows, we may discover parts of ourselves we did not even know existed. There may be a new understanding of shared values and how we see ourselves in the world.

This is the “Worm Moon” and ushers in a time of fertile growth. During this moon cycle, a new seasonal year will begin with the onset of Spring. This corresponds to the movement of the Sun into Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, and a symbolic new beginning. The energy of collective knowledge fuels this year’s cycle, as we learn to incorporate the lessons of the past year into our personal and, in turn, social lives.

We are rebelling against traditional ideas of religion, faith, and spirituality. There is a disconnect between existing traditions and values and new ideas that are coming into being.

We are torn between the comfort of our captivity and the discomfort of freedom. We walk a fine line between dancing with our demons and allowing them to run the show. At the same time, there is no benefit to be gained by ignoring these shadows altogether. We must learn to integrate all parts of the human experience in a path toward unity.

We have been juggling material resources, learning to use what we have been given. Without an influx of new beginnings, we have been resourceful, digging deep into our storehouse of knowledge and experience to make it through a difficult and long winter.

We are heading into a time of deep self-reflection, inner exploration, and shadow work that relates to our role in the collective. Much of the fear and trepidation that was present at the end of last year has dissipated and we experience a renewal of hope. The “light at the end of the tunnel” now shines brightly and we want to ensure it’s warmth reaches and sustains everyone.

We are hungry for nostalgia, we crave the comfort of the past, we hope that moving forward there will be some shreds of “the way things were.” There is still a lot of grief about the loss of normality that was brought about a year ago. Whether we feel good about the changes that ensued or not, there is still grieving to be done for all that has changed.

At the same time, we are more aware of the racism, classism, and other oppressive structures that have been once again highlighted as a result of our overall societal disruption. We desire a clean break from the past, but not one that forgets what we have learned. We want a new concept of being. A new beginning.

We are heartbroken in many ways by the lack of collective compassion. We are torn by the lack of empathy displayed by so many in our society and even across the globe. We hold a tremendous amount of grief for all that has been lost over the past year, both in lives and in a sense of stability. Even if we believe these changes are for the best, even if we have personally benefited from the current circumstances, there is still overall grief and adjustment to the massive change and loss.

Society overall, and perhaps even people in our own lives, still may not understand or believe the full implications of the pandemic. There are many defenses that shield people from the truth. Defense mechanisms that people use to keep the abyss at bay. But the darkness still exists, and it is necessary to stop and deal with the reality of our situation if we are to heal and move forward as a society and even as a species.

Our guides remind us that it is not helpful to act like a martyr or to hold a mindset of fear or scarcity. It can seem like there are not enough people working for social change or that there are not enough hours in the day or resources available to bring about desired change. It may be more helpful, however, to keep our eye on those things we are doing to create change, to heal ourselves, to learn about and act in service of anti-racism. There is no wrong way to travel our spiritual journey or exist in this lifetime. We are reminded that life is in many ways what we make it, and if we focus only on the problems we may lose sight of the actual solution.

We are on the cusp of a change in fortune, a prosperous new beginning. The new ideas we have planted send up promising new shoots. Despite our loss, opportunities for growth are on the horizon. It is up to us to use these emerging opportunities and a respectful and social responsible way.

Oracle: Leonard Cohen / Transcend
“Look Beyond Your Boundaries”
This is a time to abandon whatever is not serving you or acting in your best interest. Use the knowledge you gain from introspection and insight to fuel your decisions. Do not feel that you have to conform to old versions of yourself or to traditional ways of doing things, especially if they no longer suit your needs and desires.

Ongoing Transits:

1/13-6/28 Saturn in Aquarius Square Uranus in Taurus
This ongoing transit challenges our relationship to group values and dynamics, and the structures that keep them together. New, practical realities emerge, but not without the destruction or dissolution of outdated ways of being

2/28-4/22 Sun Conjunct Venus in Pisces
During this transit we may gain some insight into our collective values. We begin to shape our ideas and emotions into action. As spring approaches so does our shared hope for a better future founded not on love and light but on purposeful, concrete plans for change. The roots of revolution begin to flower; results of invisible underground work are now seen on the surface.

3/3-3/19 Sun Conjunct Neptune in Pisces
During this transit, we have insight into new information. Secrets may be revealed. We may have insight into parts of ourselves previously unknown. We may learn to communicate in a brand new way.

3/5 – 4/6 Mars Trine Saturn
We may move forward in a structured way, perhaps a job promotion or some other traditional hierarchical ascent. Movement within and around existing structures has more fiery and intense energy during this time.

New Transits:

3/15 Mercury enters Pisces
We see the connection between dreams and, not necessarily reality, but the symbols we use to construct reality. The subconscious is seen, discussed, and recognized. We disconnect from established structures of language and time. The “time changes” we are magically gifted another hour in the day, emphasizing the constructed reality of time itself. the time only changes because we collectively agree it to be so.

3/16 – 3/31 Mercury in Pisces square Mars in Gemini
We may have the energy to speak what has been long suppressed. There may be an urge to change or disrupt aspects of the immediate environment in order for personal growth to occur. This growth may be based on dreamlike or deep personal visions. We may have the urge to communicate but be unable to, or our message may be misunderstood, perhaps based on lack of context.

3/20 Sun enters Aries / Spring equinox
This is the midpoint between the solstices, and it carries the energy of new beginnings. With the sun moving into Aries, we carry our lessons from the collective and allow them to fuel individual action. The last year has shown us how individualism, or thinking exclusively of our personal well being, is not a sustainable or desirable worldview when viewed through the lens of social justice. We now have a deeper understanding of ourselves and how we might show up in this new season.

3/21 Venus enters Aries
We move from dreaming about our values to connecting them to individual action. We see how our ego may or may not bring our dreams to life. Where can we help ourselves, and where are we getting in our own way? Don’t let the fiery energy of spring project you too far off course. Are you acting for the common good or for personal glory?

3/28 Full Moon in Libra
This full moon turns our eye toward a just and equitable recovery as we begin to “return to normal” and there is a strong desire to ensure that social justice is not forgotten as we begin to emerge from a long slumber.

3/28 – 5/6 Mars trine Jupiter
Expansive fiery energy will flow from Jupiter to Mars as it transits from Gemini to Cancer during these several weeks.

3/28 – 4/23 Mars square Neptune
We may be more concerned with our ego than with the collective good during this time, or at least feel a conflicting energy between the two.

Today’s card from my work in progress the Rock Star Oracle is Trent Reznor / Release. “Time to let it go.”

Paired with the eight of cups, it reminds us that while it is reasonable to grieve loss or disappointment, we must be wary of escaping into our regret and allowing it to consume us.

“If you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” – Nietzsche

There are some truths about existence that, once we become aware of them, it can be difficult to fully enjoy life. The full spectrum of human suffering is so great that, if we focus our attention only on uncovering those causes of injustice, we may lose ourselves completely in the process.

On the other side of the coin, if we never do the crucial self examination to see how we have been harmed by and may continue to harm others, we are victims of spiritual bypassing. Love and light may only camouflage the darkness; it is still there waiting to be acknowledged.

Trent Reznor is well acquainted with the shadow side of human nature. His music, especially the first two studio albums, deals with themes of obsession, self-destruction, and proximity to evil. He crawls inside the abyss and makes a cozy home there, inviting us to join him on an industrial subterranean exploration.

Reznor is a conduit between what we see and what we would prefer to keep hidden. His music is a loop between suffering and release.

Reznor has also achieved massive success by crawling out of the pit of despair and stepping into his creative power. Instead of being destroyed by the abyss, he learned to transform the lessons of pain into haunting movie soundtracks.

It’s OK to be sad, to feel grief, to explore the parts of ourselves and others that are frightening and unknown. We do not want to stay in the shadows, feeding off of our and other’s pain. But we can release these experiences into the world in the form of art, narrative, or testimony to the incredible resilience of humanity.

Many barriers toward collaborative work seem to dissolve today as promising opportunities appear on the horizon.

The planet Mars, currently in Gemini, now forms a trine with Saturn and is nearly trine Pluto.

There may be an opportunity to identify structures, methods, rules or traditions(Saturn energy) that are no longer serving your community or collective work.

You may be able to introduce and implement ideas that transform your work. (Pluto energy)

One thing to keep in mind is that while Mars can add energy to a situation it does not necessarily speed things up. It also highlights our ego. So while there may be a lot of opportunity right now, transforming that opportunity into a workable situation for all involved will require skill, grace, and finesse.

Today’s cards are also a reminder of our ongoing recognition and shift away from American individualism. There is an growing awareness that care for self cannot come at the expense of others’ well being. At the same time, we cannot be responsible community members unless we care for ourselves. It is a complex dynamic that is not inherent in our culture.

Sat Mar 6

Today’s cards speak to following your heart to generate security and prosperity.

This one hits close to home for me. I am always torn between what I want to do and what is “expected” from society. It’s made even more complicated because I want to help society, and have that be my life purpose, but I want to do it in a totally unique and transformative way. This in turn creates feelings of uncertainty as I’m nervous about how my new creations will be received. Will they have value? Will they help me “make a living?”

Right now Saturn in Aquarius is square Uranus in Taurus. This oppositional energy will continue until June.

This transit carries special weight for me as I have the same square in my natal chart, where Saturn in Leo in my 2nd house is square Uranus in Scorpio in my 5th house.

Because of my (ahem) mid-life age (44 in April) I am past the much discussed Saturn return, but currently experiencing both my Uranus and Saturn opposition.

This is the crescendo of the much talked about “mid-life crisis” which kicked off for me with my Pluto square in 2014. In my opinion, this is a natal transit that will be much discussed as young astrologers enter their late 30s. If you do not heed the lessons of your Saturn return (hint, I sort of did) then Pluto square will blow up whatever else is holding you back from your true purpose. On the exact date of my Pluto square, my teaching career exploded. I should have left years earlier; Pluto finished the job.

And so the cycles continue. As we experience life’s often considerable challenges we are asked to learn, adapt, change and grow. We’re not supposed to know what we’re doing or even what’s next. But we are asked to listen to our inner voice when it whispers that the winds of change are blowing our way. If we do not follow our calling as we know and understand it, the universe will continue to try and guide us toward our destiny in any way it can – which may mean tearing out the existing foundation and starting over again.

We cannot guarantee security, but we are more abundant when we follow our heart.

Today’s cards ask us to use compassion as we extend forgiveness with others while still maintaining our personal boundaries.

Forgiveness can mean taking the higher road. It can mean releasing the expectation that you will receive an apology or any regret from the person or circumstance that caused you harm. In this way you free yourself from the burden of waiting for someone else to take action before you can begin to heal.

You may never receive an apology; indeed, the other party may not actually feel sorry for what they have done. Forgiveness doesn’t let them off the hook, it doesn’t dismiss their behavior and it doesn’t prevent them from bring held accountable. It is a personal decision you make to free yourself from anger and resentment.

Forgiveness is not an excuse for others to transgress your boundaries or continue to perpetuate harm. You can forgive someone and still not want them in your life. You can communicate boundaries and follow through when they are not honored. You can pursue justice and accountability for being hurt. You can continue to fight for your needs and for social justice while practicing forgiveness.

I think it would be spiritual bypassing to say forgiveness is necessary or even desirable in all circumstances. Righteous anger is a powerful tool for transformative change. For some, forgiveness may feel like giving up or giving in to oppression.

Overall, whether you choose to forgive and move on or whether you use that anger to fuel necessary action (or something in between) is an individual choice and depends a great deal on your cultural and spiritual beliefs. Our cards today invite an introspective look at our own capacity to forgive (ourselves and others) and how that action suits our ongoing emotional needs.

Today the Strength card makes another appearance along with hummingbird energy.

Hummingbirds are tiny, fierce and fascinating. They are highly territorial and will fight with other birds to defend their space. You may have heard the high-pitched whistle of their wings as they swoop into battle.

The stakes are high for these little birds because they must expend so much energy to harvest nectar from flowers that they strongly defend what food they find. Humingbirds will even fight over a feeder since they don’t realize they supply of sugar water will likely be replenished.

Hummingbirds are also a common spirit guides and frequently people believe these little birds embody the spirit of a deceased loved ones.

Here in Santa Cruz the indigenous people view the hummingbird as a central figure in a creation myth about how fire was obtained by the Ohlone people. In this narrative, hummingbird is strong, crafty, resourceful, and brave.

Today’s energy speaks to the fact that you can be small (or marginalized in the dominant power structure) but still be mighty.

You can set and defend the boundaries that protect what you need, but don’t get stuck fighting just because that’s what you’ve always done. Check that the conflict you engage in aligns with your values as well.

Be brave in going for your goals and feel confident that your skills, talents, and even limitations give you a unique ability and perspective to persevere.

The Tower doesn’t come up very often in daily readings, but when it does it signifies a period of tremendous change.

Saturn remains in a square with Uranus. This leads an overall “boundary breaking” feeling our energy as the structure and discipline of Saturn pushes against the rebellious nature of Uranus. There will continue to be social unrest that in turn requires intense personal growth through most of 2021 as these planets square off. This is Tower energy.

Another energetic shift in the astro world occurs as Mars leaves Taurus, an earth sign tied to material abundance, and moves into Gemini, an air sign focused on communication. Ideas may begin to flow more freely and our attention turns from making cozy homes to arranging a spring fling. Mars transits each sign for about 8 weeks, so this firey energy in Gemini will take us into springtime.

Our cards remind us today that the world turns on its axis, the sun rises and sets, planets travel on their orbit and the moon waxes and wanes. We cannot control these things nor would we want to, for while we frequently take them for granted these are the building blocks of life. We can only appreciate the divine timing of nature’s magic and study how her energy may influence our physical bodies and collective thoughts here on earth. In doing so, we acknowledge that chaos is part of the journey. We gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and thus better understand how to belong to the human family.

Today’s cards ask: Are you bringing your best to the table, or are you holding back out of fear or resentment?

We all have unique skills and talents to contribute in this world. Sometimes it can get discouraging when things don’t go our way, we are not recognized for our efforts or, even worse, we are shunned because of our unique and individual way of being.

Unity is not everyone thinking, feeling, and acting the same. We will experience freedom and community when we are able to be our true selves and contribute to the collective in a way that brings us joy. I for one do not understand how we will address issues of mental health in our society when the very expectations of being a “functioning adult” are soul killing and compromise our health and well being at every turn. How did things get this way, and can we ever recover?

Some days it is harder than others to see the light, to be optimistic, to hope for a better tomorrow. Sometimes I want to just give up and slip back into the narcotic bliss of pop culture where happiness is only a new pair of shoes away. Except no one can afford new shoes and there’s no place to wear them anyway, so what’s the point?

Today’s energy seems to ask that we dig deep to find that thing that makes us happy, satisfied, and renewed. By identifying and cultivating the hobbies, habits, and rituals that bring us joy, we resist the constraints of a society that causes pain when we do not comply, when we suffer, grieve, or fail.

Not only can we fall back on this internal reservoir when we are struggling, but it also gives us strength to bring our authentic selves to partnerships and relationships. In doing so we begin to develop communities of shared values and mutual respect for our differences.

Earlier this week we saw the Four of Cups, and today we see the next card in the series, Five of Cups. Whereas the four speaks to self-imposed barriers to moving forward, the five brings us a change in circumstance that we are forced to deal with.

There us a silver lining here, for while our existing cups have spilled there are two new cups being offered from on high. Additionally, in this version of the card from the Brady Tarot, an opportunistic raccoon is drinking up what’s left of the spilled water to ensure less waste. This card is about making the best of a bad situation, since such circumstances are inevitable in life.

This is also a key aspect of self-employment. With the courage to set out on your own also comes the resiliency to fail repeatedly and with grace, learning each time what you must do in order to persevere in following your dreams.

This is a different kind of success from making it in an established career field, where the rewards and consequences are mostly external, fixed, and can be navigated by following the rules. By contrast, those who are self employed must make their own rules, internal validation, and stamina to persevere through boom and bust.

I don’t know if I have the courage to be self employed because I prefer a regular paycheck. While more stable, it comes with its own challenges in terms of free time. A great deal of business ownership requires tolerance for risk. Yet, given our changing times, freedom may become more important than security as we strive to create a more livable world.
