The Nevermore Oracle: Work in Progress

I’ve been working on an oracle deck for spooky season that is primarily digital art. This one is inspired by and based on the words of Edgar Allen Poe.

This deck started out over a year ago with a similar concept yet completely different design. Originally I had only black and white elements with white or red backgrounds. I did not like the red elements and just having the black and white line art didn’t feel totally “me” and also the deck didn't have a cohesive look.

This is definitely a challenge when using clip art that has not been purchased as part of a set. Even then, I don't like to use those because even if I’ve purchased the license, to be totally matchy-matchy with someone else’s full design doesn’t feel authentic to my vision. I like to pick and choose from different collections and styles.

I decided to add small floral elements which immediately felt more like my style. I’m currently working on tweaking the fonts and spacing of each quote to get the right look on each card. I was going for a Victorian vibe with this deck since that reflects Poe’s period and Goth aesthetic.

There will be 40 cards in this Tarot-sized deck and they will come in a velvet bag. I’m not sure about a guidebook yet — I have to wait for inspiration to strike!

This deck will definitely be available to purchase before Halloween. If you want to make sure to be informed when it goes on sale, join my mailing list for updates via email.
